China is one of the largest sovereign Bitcoin holders globally, with ~190,000 BTC — about 0.9% of total supply — traced to the 2019 PlusToken Ponzi seizure and forfeited to the state treasury by court order in November 2020. The holdings carry a $0 cost basis and have never been formally classified as a strategic reserve, despite ranking second only to the U.S. among governments as of May 2026.
